== Welcome ==

We're happy you've shown interest in contributing to the wiki, we welcome all editors and assume good faith for all edits made, so there are very few protected pages. Don't be afraid to jump in and start correcting and adding to pages.

This is a quick guide to how you can help

One note, you will need to link your byond account to your forum account to be able to edit the wiki. Instructions are on the forum.

== [[Wikicode]] ==

Wikicode is the strange syntax used by all wikipedias including this one. If you don't know it and are prepared to learn, you can read the internal wikicode page [[Wikicode|here]], or read the Wikipedia page [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Wiki_markup here]. If you don't want to spend your life learning this markup, then fret not, you can still help.

== What needs doing? ==

=== New pages ===

New content is constantly being added to ss13 which needs tutorials and such. Before you start to write a page, search for it and if you can't find it, start one yourself. We welcome all contributions to the wiki and trust all edits to be made in good faith. As a recommendation if you wish to work on a page uninterrupted and not worry about other users edits while working, make it in your personal [[Special:MyPage/Sandbox|sandbox]] area or anywhere in your own pages. If you don't know wikicode, you can create a unformatted page and ask someone else to format it for you.

=== Content revisions ===

A list of pages which need revisions can be found [[:Category:Needs revision|here]]

Updates are frequent and we need people to update the information on the wiki. To do this simply edit the page with new information. If you don't know wikicode you can write the new, updated content on the discussion page without formatting.

=== Images ===

If you have relevant images then upload them and add them to the page they're intended for. It is appreciated if the pictures of items you add have a blank background and are in the .gif or .png format. The easiest way to add images of items is to download the [[Downloading the source code#Downloading|source code]], open the icons .dmi files and export images as .gif's or .png's from there.

=== Marking for revision and deletion ===

If a page is '''up to date''' when you read it, please put the following tag at it's top (with the correct date):

<code>
<nowiki>{{Lastrevision | date = 15. 1. 2012}}</nowiki><br>
</code>

If a page is '''out of date''' or doesn't have a reason for existing, add one of the following tags to the top of the page:

<code>
<nowiki>{{Needs revision}}</nowiki><br>
</code>
<code>
<nowiki>{{Needs revision | reason = Out of date.}}</nowiki><br>
</code>
or<br>
<code>
<nowiki>{{delete}}</nowiki>
</code>

==Talk Pages==
When write on a page or user's '''talk page''' (for example [[Talk:Main_Page]]), there are a few things you need to know.

===Signature===
Always end of your message with your signature, so everyone knows who wrote what (without checking the edit history).<br>
This can be done easily by using <code><nowiki>~~~~</nowiki></code> after your message. You can customize your signature on your [[Special:Preferences|user preferences page]].

{|class="wikitable" style="font-size:90%; border: 2px solid darkgrey" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="0" colspan="2" ||
Look. - [[User:Deantwo|Deantwo]] ([[User_talk:Deantwo|talk]]) 10:35, 30 November 2013 (CET)
|}

===Indentation===
When replying to another user's message, be sure to ''indent'' your message so it is visibly a reply to the above message.<br>
This is done by simply adding <code><nowiki>:</nowiki></code> at the start of the line will cause this effect.

{|class="wikitable" style="font-size:90%; border: 2px solid darkgrey" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="0" colspan="2" ||

===Headline===
If you are starting a new topic, add a headline with the name of the topic. If a talk page is used a lot, it can become confusing if the topics aren't separated with headlines. It also allows for section editing, which makes editing long talk pages a lot easier.<br>
This is one of the most basic things on a wiki, and are used by typing <code><nowiki>==Topic==</nowiki></code> on the line above your message.

{|class="wikitable" style="font-size:90%; border: 2px solid darkgrey" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="0" colspan="2" ||
== Jokes ==

Some pages are intended to be entertaining but when writing guides, remember that a newbie might not realize something is a joke or sarcasm, even if it's blatantly obvious to the rest of us. Think where jokes fit and where they don't. Also, if you're updating someone else's joke, think whether yours is actually funnier.

== Guide to Writing and Revising a Guide ==
Always keep in mind what these guides are for; they're so newbies can quickly skim across them so they can have half an idea what they've just been selected for.

'''A good guide needs, by order:'''
* A brief one-two paragraph description of what the mode is.
* A bullet point list of short to the point key points of key mechanics, these should be no longer than two sentences each. And remember: key points means the important shit you need to know to atleast bumble fuck your way around at round start, you should be able to read and understand it within 5 minutes.
* A more meaty section detailing the game mechanics in depth (this is where you explain what all runes and talismans do, including the ones that are barely used), it should still be clear and concise.
* A summary of the key points, yes - one at the start and one at the end. Reiteration helps to hammer things home. This one will more or less be simple list to remind the reader of things, it wont explain them.
* Further reading - this is where you link to the pages that detail advanced strategies for fighting for and against the cult. No you don't put them on the main page because that will clutter it.
* Links! Remember to add links to [[Game modes|game modes]], [[Guides#Antagonist Guides|antagonist roles]], [[jobs]], items and [[guides]] you mention! Simply do it when you re-read your content before submitting.

A bad guide is one that's a giant wall of text that's overly fluffed up and full of opinionated bullshit.<br>
A newbie is going to take one glance at it and shit their pants out of fright, and advanced player is just going to go "Yeah.... I'm not reading someone's sperg page".

[At the moment]{{citation needed}} [[Guides#Security guides|Security's guides]] are good. [[Space Law]] is unfluffed and tells plainly the basics of what a [[security officer]] needs to know to start patrolling and robusting greyshirts. The [[Guide to security]] is more fleshed out and explains things more in depth and lists strategies to counter antags.<br>
[[Cult]], [[Malf]], and [[Traitor]] are bad because they're giant imposing walls of text that reads like a newspaper: squished up text that obscures the facts with needless opinions and blurbs that you don't need to know off the bat.

'''So remember:'''
* Facts good, opinions bad.
* Keep your facts clear of irrelevant fluff and other bullshit.
* Keep the basic guide basic, keep the advanced stuff on a separate page.
* Important stuff first, depth and explanation and unimportant things second.
* White space, tables, sections, and formatting are essential for ease of reading. We're not print media, space isn't at a premium so use it freely.
* Links!
* I just used the above template to write this guide.

=== Welcome to the FTL13 wiki! ===

FTL13 is a branch of /tg/ that takes place on a ship capable of moving.
=== About SS13 ===
''Space Station 13 is a paranoia-laden roleplaying game set against the backdrop of a nonsensical, metal death trap masquerading as a space station.''

Space Station 13 is a 2D multiplayer space station simulator with fully destructible environments. [[What is FTL13|More info about the nature of the game can be found here.]]

It can take some time to get used to the dynamics of the game.

Below is a quick tutorial to get you started on your first visit to FTL13.

== FTL13, and It's Challenges ==

So, time to get to the FTL13 part of the guide. You wanted to join, I gave you the ip, the knowledge, the tips. Now for some real things.
First thing is first, it is MEDIUM RP. So don't go pissing people off, stealing items, and most importantly, don't fire the damn MAC. Make sure you read the other guides too, this isn't just nothing but /TG/ guides and whatnot. Make sure to not only use this guide, other guides as well. At the beginning of every game, there will be objectives for the crew to complete. You, no matter job you are, you must try and help, unless of course, you're an [[Terminology#Antag|Antagonist]].

=== What Jobs are the most Useful in this Gamemode? ===
Basically anyone that ISN'T a civilian job. Chaplains and Clowns and Librarians (oh my!) do not belong in the ship. If you want to be useful and still try to learn the basics, play a job in [[Medical_Doctor|Medical]], or [[Shaft_Miner|Mining]], or [[Chef]]/[[Bartender]]. If you're new to the game ENTIRELY, play [[Cargo_Technician|Cargo]].

The roles you shouldn't be playing at all as a newbie, are the [[Heads_of_Staff|heads of staff]], [[Scientist|Science]], and DEFINITELY not [[Engineer|Engineering]]. For preference to not play, do not play the top of this list which is the [[Chain_of_Command|chain of command]]. Once you read more of our guides, you can start playing the higher authorities if you wish. '''BEWARE''' though. If you are easily bored by a job or stressed by it, '''DO NOT PLAY IT.''' Rounds in this gamemode can go for HOURS.
== The Rules ==
It isn't really fair to shove the [http://ftl13.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=16 rules] straight down your throat already, but it is important that you are at least aware that we have them set in place to ensure an enjoyable experience for all players. Please take a moment and [http://ftl13.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=16 read them].
== Character Setup ==
You'll learn this part by yourself, for the first time follow my instructions so we can get to the game as quickly as possible:

After you [[New_Players#Connecting_to_the_Server|join the server]], you will be greeted with a window which has "Setup Character", "Join Game!", "Observe" and "Show Player Polls" on it.

Click the '''Setup Character''' button and you will get a settings window. Here you can determine what your character looks like. Be sure to "Save Setup"!

[[File:Newplayeroptions.png]]

Click the '''Set Occupation Preferences''' -button.

[[File:Startup.png]]

Click on a job three times so that medical, mining, or a civilian job (that ISN'T a head) is toggled to '''High'''.

[[File:Startjobs.png]]

Click '''Done'''.

Click the '''Save Setup''' button on Character Setup -screen and you will be an Assistant automatically the next time shift starts at the beginning.

Close the Character Setup -screen, choose '''Join Game!''' (if there's no Join Game! -button, it means that the round hasn't started yet, in this case click on "Declare Ready!").

[[File:Joingame.png]]

A list of available jobs will pop up, choose anyone you want, as long as it isn't a head, or at the top left.

'''Trust me, do not pick any other job as you're still only learning the basics and are not ready for them!'''

Welcome to the Station! You'll join the other players on the Station by spawning into the Arrivals Shuttle - don't get scared if it's been blown to pieces and you spawn into deadly space, it happens from time to time and you'll get to try again soon.
|-
|'''2 [[File:Hud-hands.gif]] Hands''' - Shows you what you are currently holding, and which hand you will interact with. This is also where you can switch between which hand you're currently using.
|-
|
{| class="mw-collapsible mw-collapsed wikitable"
|-
|{{anchor|Intent}}'''3 [[File:Hud-intent.gif]] Intent Switch''' - This is your intent. Decides how you will interact towards another person when you click on them.
|-
| [[File:Intent_Help.png]] '''Help''' - Help, well, helps people. This can mean you're trying to wake someone up, help them stand (both of which require an empty hand), give them [[CPR]] (to keep them alive if their status is critical) or medication, if you're compassionately inclined. As stated earlier, trying to help someone with an item equipped will usually just make you beat them with the object, and then have you possibly be beaten by security - also known as being passive-aggressive.

Clicking yourself with the Help Intent gives you a brief self-diagnosis--if you don't have a health analyzer handy, at least you know what parts of your body to target when healing yourself.

Help intent also allows you to walk through other people instead of bumping into them.
|-
| [[File:Intent_Disarm.png]] '''Disarm''' - Disarm has the highest chance to disable your target by either stunning, weakening or even knocking them unconscious. Disarm tends to be the most useful for ensuring that you survive and come out in top in a duel and it has plenty of offensive use in larger brawls and is used most often. As goes a popular saying, "disarm intent is best intent."

Many actions can be resisted by spamming the resist action, but if they're floored then they can't do shit. Trying to disarm someone with an empty hand will either push them down for about five seconds - buying you precious time to secure your escape, or make them drop their weapon which WILL make them a lot less dangerous and turn the tables if they were carrying something particularly [[robust]], like a circular saw.
|-
| [[File:Intent_Grab.png]] '''Grab''' - Grabbing someone will place a hold on them. Grabbing them again will cause to put them in progressively more advanced holds: passive, aggressive, hands, and neck.

Passive is used to make people follow you but they can break free by simply moving in another direction. Aggressive is essentially the same thing, But the targeted person must try to [[resist]] to weaken your hold to a less advanced stage (provided they're not disabled) and escape.

Hands is similar to aggressive, but you can throw them onto tables or across the room. Neck will move them onto the same tile as you, knock them to the ground and cause you to move much slower. While you've placed a hold on someone's neck, they will slowly lose oxygen, but you can press "kill" to speed up the process. You must have an empty hand slot to try and grab someone (try right clicking them and selecting "pull" to get them to follow you)!
|-
| [[File:Intent_Harm.png]] '''Harm''' - Harm does the most damage and will [[Terminology#Crit|crit]] them more quickly than disarm. It's most useful when your victim is already disabled somehow.
|}
|-
|'''4 [[File:Hud-walkrun.gif]] Run Switch''' - A button that toggles between running and walking. Running over wet floors will cause you to slip.
|-
|'''5 [[File:Hud-target.gif]] Body Target''' - Shows what part of someone's body you will interact with. Interacting with different parts can do different things. To change this, click on the different parts of the body.
|-
|'''6 Commands:'''

'''[[File:Hud-pull.png]] Stop Pull''' - Right-clicking some objects gives you the option to pull them. When you want to stop pulling, hit this button.

{| class="mw-collapsible mw-collapsed wikitable"
|-
|[[File:Hud-resist.png]] '''Resist''' - Used to free yourself if you've been restrained by something.
|-
|The resist button is used to... resist, or break free from these kinds of situations:
* Someone else's grab
* Chair of bed you're buckled on to
* Handcuffs
* Space vines
* Welded or locked [[Locker]]s
* Stop, Drop, and Rolling when you're on fire
|}

'''[[File:Hud-drop.png]] Drop''' - Hitting this will drop whatever you have in your currently active hand.

'''[[File:Hud-throw.png]] Throw''' - Toggles Throw mode. Clicking anywhere on the screen with this active will throw the object in your active hand in that direction. It also lets you catch things thrown at you.
|-
|'''7 [[File:Hud-health.gif]] Health''' - Fades to orange, then red as you take more damage. The letters CRIT means you are currently dying. You may be saved if someone administers medical treatment in time. Performing CPR on someone in critical condition can prolong their death long enough to get them to [[Medbay|medical treatment]].
|-
|'''8 [[File:Hud-internals.gif]] Internals Status''' - Shows whether or not you have internals running. Internals consist of an oxygen tank and a breath mask. Internals are required in areas exposed to space or [[Guide_to_Atmospherics#The_Gases_and_Their_Functions|hazardous gases]]. Clicking this will toggle it on/off if you have them equipped.
== Doing Things ==
The game uses a '''point-and-click system'''. You select '''which hand''' you wish to use with the [[File:Hud-hands.gif]] '''hand buttons''' and by clicking on the item you wish to interact with.

E.g. if you want to heal someone's bruise damage with a bruisepack, you first '''click on the bruisepack with an empty hand''' to pick it up and then '''click on the patient with the bruise pack in your active hand.'''

Some items can hold more items, such as a backpack. To open it, simply click on it. If you wish to remove your backpack from your back (or any other wearable container item), '''click and drag''' it to an empty hand.

To drop an item, simply hit the '''Drop button''' with the item in your active hand.

=== Learn as You Play -Exercises ===
Here we come to the first sign of of whether you'll be a good player or not:

If you're bored already and can't be assed to do these exercises then you're probably not going to like Space Station 13.

'''If you are eager to learn, however, you will become a good player.'''

These exercises are not mandatory, but they will make you "get" the user interface much more quickly, and teach you how to communicate with others, which is extremely important. You can try to learn it by yourself, but [[Guide to evading getting banned|DON'T JUST GRAB AN ITEM AND START HITTING PEOPLE WITH IT]], or your existence on SS13 will be very short indeed. We highly recommend following through the short tutorial which is followed by this.

<font size="4">'''First Day on the Job:'''</font size>
:#Click the jumpsuit with an empty hand to pick it up.
:#Switch hands by clicking on the [[File:Hud-hands.gif]] hand button or by pressing Page Up.
:#Repeat this for shoes and pick them up.
:#Click the backpack with the hand which has the jumpsuit in order to place it inside the backpack.
:#Place the shoes inside the backpack.

:Now you'll need to head out of the [[Arrivals|Arrival Shuttle]] to a secluded area and change your clothes.
:#Head out of the Arrival Shuttle to the north.
:#Go into either of the Escape Pod shaft (red doors).
:#In your inventory bar on the bottom left, click the gray jumpsuit, that you're wearing, to take it off (notice that your PDA and ID also fall off because the slot availability changes depending on your clothing).
:#Now open your backpack and take the new jumpsuit out.
:#Click the now vacant slot (where your jumpsuit used to be, the left side of your inventory) to get dressed.
:#Pick up your ID and place it back in your ID slot (bottom row, third left slot from your hands).
:#Pick up your PDA and place it on your belt (bottom row, second left slot from your hands).
:#Now remove your shoes, take the new ones from your backpack and place the new ones on.
:#You may leave the old jumpsuit and shoes here as you won't need them anymore.
|-
|[[File:BreathMask.png]]<font size="3">'''3. Internals:'''</font size>

:The station has likely been beat up a bit since the beginning of the round and so it is a good idea to put internals on for just in case we come across a place with no breathable atmosphere. The internals can be found ready in a box in your backpack. Take them out of the box and put them on.
:#Open the backpack and take out the box.
:#Open the box with your other hand.
:#Take out the breath mask and place it in your mask slot (upper slot of your inventory).
:#Pick up your PDA from your belt and place it in your free pocket (bottom row, to the right of your hands).
:#Take the emergency oxygen tank from the box and put it where your PDA used to be on the belt.
:#Turn internals on by clicking on the internals status icon ([[Starter_guide#Heads_Up_Display|number 8 on the HUD-image above]]).
|}
'''Great! Now you're ready to start your first day on Space Station 13!'''

==== Writing, radio and PDA's ====
{|align="center" style="width:100%; border:2px lightgrey solid; background:#E6F8FF; text-align:center;"
|
Let's learn how basic communication works.
{| class="wikitable" style="text-align: left; background-color:#FAFEFF;"
|-
|[[File:Pen.png]]<font size="3">'''4. Writing:'''</font size>

:It's good to have things written down, so I want you to write your name on the sheet of paper in the [[Security Checkpoint]].
:# Head out of the maintenance shaft through the same door you came in.
:# Go south past the arrival shuttle and then to the right.
:# There is a small office with gray and red floors there with a desk which should have a pen, a sheet of paper and a recharger.
:# Get to the desk, pick the pen and click on the sheet of paper.
:# Write <code>"Assistant [your name] arrived on SS13 on [date here]"</code> (example: ''Assistant Matt Droid arrived on SS13 on 27.11.2010'') and hit OK.
:# Put the pen back on the desk, examine the note (Shift + Click it), and close the window after you're done examining.
|-
|[[File:Headset.png]]<font size="3">'''5. Radio:'''</font size>

:Okay, you're an assistant, which means you can theoretically work anywhere and assist with tasks. Practice dictates otherwise, but we won't pay lazy asses round here, so try to get a job now. Try to ask someone if they need assistance.
:# Using the radio is simple. Instead of using <code>'''say "Hello"'''</code> like you would to say things to the people around you, you use <code>'''say ";Hello"'''</code>. Basically you add a semicolon before your message. Some departments have department radios (e.g. security, engineering, medical). As an assistant, however, you don't belong to a department, and as such don't have a department radio, but when you do, it works by writing <code>'''say ".h Hello"'''</code> (or <code>'''#h'''</code>, or <code>''':h'''</code> for departmental radio, whichever suits you best).
:# Be polite and professional when asking. An example of how to ask: say <code>";This is assistant [your name], I've just arrived on this station and am wondering if anyone needs assistance with any job."</code>
:# Then you wait for a reply, if someone says they need you, then go to them and learn from them, you can continue these exercises at any times. If the call ends up with you dead on the floor, don't get mad, it happens all the time.
:# If you don't get a reply, continue with this exercise.
|-
|[[File:Normalpda.gif]]<font size="3">'''6. PDA:'''</font size>

:You have been issued with a Portable Data Assistant which you should now have in your pocket. I want you to enable the PDA's flashlight and send a message to some random person.
:# Your PDA already holds a pen inside, which is removable by right-clicking on the PDA and selecting Remove Pen.
:# The PDA can also hold an ID card inside it. Take your ID and click the PDA with your ID in active hand to place it in. Your PDA/ID combination can be held in your ID slot to function as an ID card but this way you can also save one inventory slot.
:# Open your PDA by clicking and dragging the PDA to anywhere you can see on the screen. You can also take it in your hand and use it by clicking it again or pressing Page Down.
:# The PDA has several tools available. Different department's PDA's have more specific tools like health analyzers and power monitors. Yours is simple however and only has a few basic tools.
:# To enable the flashlight click the 'enable flashlight' link at the bottom. Note that the flashlight is very weak. You'll see the difference in dark areas such as maintenance shafts.
:# To send a message, open the Messenger from the main menu.
:# You'll see a list of detected PDA's, click one at random and send a message to them. Message's content is your choice, if you can't think of anything just say <code>"Hi!"</code>, don't get upset if the recipient doesn't answer, they're probably dead or just very busy.
:# Close the PDA.
|-
|}
'''Congratulations!'''

You've just finished the tutorial and know how basic things works (or at least a little better than just jumping right in without following this through).

But wait! The learning doesn't just stop here, not for a looong time. There's so much to learn on each job on the station, all the tips and tricks of the trade... the learning NEVER ENDS!
|}

==== Next recommended steps ====
# Explore the station, keep your mouse cursor over doors and check your lower left bar for the room's name. Check the [[map]] and get used to the layout, the station is really not as big as it first seems.
# Talk to people, ask them what they're doing and if you could be of any assistance. The [[bar]] is an excellent place to find bored people who have nothing else to do but socialize.
# Go get a rookie-version of some job, ([[Jobs#Civil_duty_jobs|civil duty jobs]] are mostly easy) and join a department mid-shift. Most of these jobs give you no pressure if you join mid-shift. Walk to the [[Head of Personnel|Head of Personnel (HoP)'s]] desk (if there's no one at the desk you can PDA message the HoP asking him/her to come over as soon as possible) and ask the HoP a job recommendation or you can recommend a job idea of your own (e.g. Pianist, Space Hobo, Waiter, Test Subject, Boxer)!
# Most rounds end with a shuttle call, the [[Escape Shuttle]] will arrive to the [[Escape Shuttle Hallway]], which you can find easily if you follow the panicking people, blood trails and hallways leading east. Get on board the shuttle, buckle yourself to a chair and enjoy the ride! When you arrive to CentCom, the round ends and another one starts soon after, such is the circle of life in Space Station 13.
# Read the few tips underneath and start your second round by choosing your first "real job" as a [[Cargo Tech]], which you should probably play for at least a few rounds. Don't get greedy, work your way slowly up from civilian jobs to more vital ones. Good luck and have fun!

=== Keyboard Shortcuts ===
Check out the list of [[Keyboard Shortcuts]] for making your life on the station easier.

== General Tips ==
Some general tips to get you through gameplay:
* Play your first "real" round as a [[Cargo Technician]] - it will let you learn the controls from more experienced players (notably the [[Quartermaster]]) in a low stress, low importance job, while being useful. All the info how to do the job (and any job, for that matter) can be found on the [[Jobs|job's own page]]. There's no need to rush into things, read the job page entirely and you've learned more than most at that point.
* It's perfectly okay and encouraged to tell people you are new in IC chat! Some of your coworkers might even take the time to show you the ropes.
* Keep a close eye on the chatlog, especially if things are happening fast, you might miss an <span style="color:red">'''important big, red, bolded text'''</span>.
* Not sure what something is? Shift+click on an object to examine it. If you need more info, [[Objects|search the object from wiki]]. Every door on the station has a label, so if you're not sure where you are, examine a nearby door and check the [[map]].
* Didn't understand something someone said? Check [[Terminology]], there's a big chance you'll find your translation there.
* Some things still seem incomprehensible? Ask away by using [[Adminhelp]] (press F1 or type <code>Adminhelp</code>).
* Join after the round officially starts, so to minimize the risk of being the target of an antagonist.
* Clicking and dragging your [[PDA]] enables hands free usage. Clicking your PDA with an ID places it inside.
* If OOC chat is too noisy for you you can toggle it off under the Preferences tab in-game.
* [[Internals]] are important in case you find yourself in an area without oxygen. You'll know if this is happening by an O2 indicator flashing and messages in chat that you are gasping for breath. You start with a box with internals in your backpack. To set up an internal gas supply, you need a mask and an oxygen tank. Put the [[Gas Mask|mask]] on the mask slot and your [[oxygen tank]] on your belt, pocket or back. Then click the [[Starter guide#Heads up display|internals status button]] to toggle it. Note that they run out of air eventually, the pressure of the gas supply in use can be observed from the info-tab.
* Space is deadly without a [[space suit]] on, and a set of internals running, or proper mutations which enable you to live without air or warmth.
* Examining your [[Clothes_and_internals#Earpieces|radio headset]] will list all available channels and how to talk on them.
* Having your [[intent]] on 'help' will let you walk through others with help intent on instead of bumping into them. Always have 'help' on when moving around.
* If you get contacted by an [[Administrators|admin]] please reply politely and simply tell your side of the story. You reply to admins by clicking on their name.
* The medi-pen in your internals box will stabilize people who have taken more then 100 points of damage. If you feel at risk of falling into critical health feel free to inject yourself with it. It will slowly heal a minor amount of damage and stave off death. Do note it will not revive someone from critical health, they will still need to receive external aid.

<font size="3">'''PLEASE DO NOT:'''</font size>
* Tell anyone about a [[Hud|symbol]] suddenly appearing over your head. You are (most likely) now part of a [[cult]] (black icon above your head), [[gang]] (brown G above your head) or [[revolution]] (red R above your head) and will get a notification of this.
* Share any in-character information in the [[OOC]]-channel or over IRC (be careful what you say here; it's extremely easy to spoil the roundtype to everyone and doing this can and will result in a ban. See [[Terminology#IC_in_OOC|IC in OOC]] for more information).
* Play any [[Heads of Staff]] jobs until you have some experience as their subordinates. Heads are (ideally) the most competent person in their department and know how to control their subordinates and get things done most efficiently. Joining as one can ruin the whole department, and generally make everyone have a bad time.
* Play [[Jobs#Law_and_order|Security roles]] until you have a very good handle on the game's mechanics. Security staff are mostly needed where things get very hectic and robust. Being extremely non-robust is likely to make you only be in the way of the competent security staff.
* If you get killed, don't complain in OOC. If you feel the kill was unjust, use [[Adminhelp]] (same reason and the first one).

Also, try to resist the urge to press the "be syndicate" buttons when you join the game. [[Jobs#Antagonist|Antagonist roles]] can be excessively hard, and next to impossible to the newest of players! See the requirements next to each antagonist job and train them before applying. Get your space legs for a bit, and hope you get brainwashed in a [[Revolution]] or [[Cult magic|Cultist]] round to have a watered down [[traitor]] experience before taking the plunge.

If you become an antagonist (you can tell by the big red text that appears saying you are a Traitor/Revolutionary Head/Cultist/Space Wizard/Nuclear Operative/Blob), and you didn't want to be one, go to the Admin tab in the top right corner of your screen, and hit the button labeled [[Adminhelp]]. Then, in the textbox that appears, politely tell the admins that you're a new guy and want your antagonist status gone. If you DO want to play an antagonist, ignore the last step,and take a read through the [[Game Modes]] page and figure out what antagonist you are, and how to play it. [[Adminhelp]] if you have any questions, however, and '''do not say you are an antagonist in the OOC Chat. This will get you banned for spoiling the roundtype.'''
== Closing ==
Keep in mind that the '''point of this game (like any game) is to have fun'''! Just follow the [[rules]], don't be a jerk, check the updates and remember a little of how each job works (so you know what department blows up the ship and which one [[Beyond the impossible|cures you of diseases]]) and you're well on your way becoming that awesome guy who everyone likes working with.

A miracle substance, this is one of the things SS13 mines and researches.
=The States of Plasma=
Plasma has a number of different states.
*'''Plasma Ore'''
**''Plasma Ore'' is mined by [[Shaft Miner]]s on the [[Mining_Station|mining outpost]].
=Analysis: The Identity of Plasma=
So, for several years, NT has been doing this "plasma research" shit. However, apparently, NT only hired pyromaniacs and terrorists to work with plasma. As such, the identity of plasma is a mystery, other than that it's purple and floaty n' shit.

So, I figured, hey, it's winter break! I might as well sperg out, right?

Now, when a hydrocarbon burns, it produces CO2, and H2O. '''Burning Plasma produces ONLY CO2.''' Thus, Plasma is a hydrocarbon. It is composed ONLY of Hydrogen, and Carbon. Now, it MAY also contain oxygen, but that is variable. Given that we don't actually have water as a gas in SS13, you can just ignore the part about the water. One thing about hydrocarbons, is that they are usually gases, then around hexane, turn to volatile liquids. Plasma, is very fucking volatile (Ever spill a beaker of it? Take my advice: Don't.)

===Now, for the number crunching and data.===
From here on in, a CANISTER refers to to the large, colored gas containers that you fill TANKS in. A CANISTER needs to be pulled, a TANK can be held in your hand.

A full canister of plasma has an internal pressure of 4559.6 kPa. Said full canister of plasma was released in a 6x6 room, built in space. This room was entirely devoid of air, and had a temperature of 0 Celsius (270 Kelvin). A gas analyzer was used to measure the pressure in this 6x6 room. It was 20.4 kPa, and the temperature was 19C (289K). NOW, HERE IS THE VARIABLE PART: In ooc, it was agreed upon that a tile had a volume of 1.6 m3. HOWEVER. In the code, it says that a gas cell is 2.5m3. Ultimately, using the 2.5 m³ tile messes things up, getting us into a situation where we end up with half a carbon, and, yeah. For the sake of completion, I'll post the math for both.

'''First, the 1.6 m³:'''

Using the Ideal Gas Formula (PV=nrt), we can calculate the number of moles of plasma in our room, via some algebra fandangling. PV=nrt/rt = (PV)/(rt)=n. Pressure times volume DIVIDED BY gas constant times temperature equals moles.

1.6 m³ = 4.096.    6x6 = 36.    4.096 x 36 = 147.456.   1 m³ = 1000 l.   147.456 x 1000 = 147,456 l.

(20.4 kPa)(147,456 l) / (8.314 kPa/l/K/mol)(292 K) = 3008102.4 / 2402.746 = '''1251.95 mol plasma.'''

'''NOW FOR THE 2.5 m³:'''

2.5³ = 15.625 x 36 = 562.5 x 1000 = 562,500 l

Plugging the 562,500 l into the equation and replacing the 147,456 l with it gives us '''4726.8 mol of plasma.'''

This is quite a difference.

((((I also did this for oxygen, but ultimately that data is not needed for this, so yeah)))))

===NOW ONTO THE PART THAT INVOLVES FIRE===
A full tank of plasma, which contains either 4774.80 mol or 1251.95 mol of plasma at 4559.6 kPa, was pumped into the incinerator burn chamber. An excess of oxygen was then pumped in, and the whole mix was ignited. After it cooled, our brave atmos tech scientist entered. Some time was taken to let the mixture spread throughout the 10 tile area. The area was then scanned.

375.35 kPa, at 97.4 °C (370.4K). THIS WAS DONE ON ASTEROIDSTATION HOWEVER, and on Asteroid, the incinerator burn chamber is not empty! CO2 53 %, O2 36 %, N2 9 %.

375.35 x 0.53 = 198.935 kPa.

===Go CO<sub>2</sub> woohooo===
Now let's see how much CO2 a single canister of plasma can make. 156,250 l for the volume of the 2.5 m³.

10 x 4.096 x 1000 = 40,960 l

10 x 15.625 x 1000 = 156,250 l

(198.935)(40,960 l) / (8.314)(370.4) = 2,646 mol CO2.

(198.935)(156,250 l) / (8.314)(370.4) = 10,093.696 mol CO2.

EVERYTHING IN ITALICS IS CORRECT AS FAR AS PROCEDURE AND METHOD GOES, BUT THE ACTUAL NUMBERS ARE INCORRECT. I'M ONLY KEEPING IT AS AN EXPLANATION OF CONVERTING MOLES OF CO2 TO MOLES OF CARBON.

''Now then, because moles are hilarious little units, if we have 591.17 mol of CO2, we also have 591.17 mole of C.

591.13 mol / (1 molC / 1 molCO2) = 591.13. Don't believe me? 591.13 mol / 1 molCO2 x 46 = 27,192 g. The molecular weights of Carbon and CO2 are 14 and 46 respectively. The percent by mass of carbon in CO2 is 14 / 46 = 0.3043 x 100 = 30.43 %. 27,192 x 0.3043 = 8274.52 g carbon. 8274.52 g carbon / 14 gC x 1 molC = 591.13 molC. Fucking math, how does it work. The same applies for the 2.5 m³ one. So it's 2232 mol Carbon if a tile is 2.5 m³.''

===What the fuck is CO<sub>2</sub>===

Now, That means that 1251.94 molPlasma + ??? molO2 ----> ??? molH2O + 2,656 molCO2. But because we did the above, we can basically summarize that there are 2,646 mol of carbon in 1251.94 mol of Plasma.

Pure hydrocarbon chains exhibit a funny property. By taking the amount of CO2 produced (and thus, carbon), and dividing it by the moles of hydrocarbon you burnt to get said CO2 (and assuming you have 100 % total combustion, no carbon monoxide produced), you can find out how many carbons are in a single mole of the Hydrocarbon!

Thus, the burning of Hexane is:

C<sub>6</sub>H<sub>14</sub> + (19/2)O<sub>2</sub> ---> 6CO<sub>2</sub> + 7H<sub>2</sub>0

So:

12C<sub>6</sub>H<sub>14</sub> + blah --> 72CO<sub>2</sub> + blah

72 / 12 = 6 !

THUUUUUUUS!

2656 / 1251.95 If we divide the two, we get 2.11, meaning that for every 1 mole of plasma, we have 2.11 moles of carbon!

And if we use the 2.5 m³, we end up with 10,093 / 4995 = 2.02! Told you it didn't matter.

Now, this is all theoretical, and calculations, and I've rounded a lot of the decimals (I ain't working with 24.858849389200102299383838392929292 due to spessmens, 2.858 will suffice), we can thus say, that there are TWO CARBONS IN A PLASMA MOLECULE. Plus, y'know, you can't have .11, or .02, of a molecule. Shit just ain't possible.

Which means that plasma has a structure that looks something like:

'''C-C,,,,C=C, or C≡C'''

With three, two, and one bonding site on each carbon, respectively.

===A rant about isotopes===

But...Then plasma is just a regular derivative of ethane, ethene, or ethyne! "what the fuck pybro you're such a fucking faggot you waste my very precious ten minutes!". Hold up there! Yes, it's just regular ethene, ethane, '''IF''' YOU USE 1H, AKA Protium, AKA "Normal hydrogen" AKA "A single proton with an electron buzzing around it". Atoms are composed of protons (positive), electrons (negative), and neutrons (neutral). Isotopes are atoms that have a "deviant" number of neutrons. This messes shit up, and gives isotopes different properties than the "normal" element. Generally (although there are exceptions!), the "normal" isotope has as many neutrons as it does protons. Protium AKA "normal" hydrogen, is one such exception.

Hyrogen has two isotopes. One, Deuterium, which is stable, and forms Deuterium Oxide (D2O), AKA "Heavy Water" (heavy water icecubes don't float on top of liquid water or heavy water, fun fact). Deuterium is a proton, a neutron, and an electron. There is also, TRITIUM, which is two neutrons, a proton, an electron. Tritium is also radioactive. On earth, Tritium is rare. In spess however, it's rather common (the source of tritium on earth is normal hydrogen getting hit by COSMIC RAYS). Tritium is also very toxic.

Hydrogens isotopes are very special, in that they get their own letters! Protium is H, Deuterium is D, and Tritium is T.

I propose that the hydrogens in plasma are actually Tritium. This raises the molecular mass up to the point where you could have a beaker of it as a liquid, but upon spilling it, get a gas. Tritium is toxic, but only when you actually get it in you, despite the fact that it's radioactive, the radiation from it is not strong enough to break your skin, although it might give you skin cancer, but your guts will be fine.

Thus, we know the following:
* Plasma is a two carbon compound, and the only two other elements that are/could be in it are hydrogen and oxygen.
* Plasma is a volatile liquid.
* Plasma can be a liquid, gas, and solid at room temperature.
* Plasma is highly toxic when inhaled, drank, and injected, but is fairly harmless (in the short term) when your skin touches it. Unless, y'know, you get set on fire.
* Plasma burns readily in the presence of oxygen, both when a liquid and a gas.
* When mixed with nitrogen and hydrogen, it produces lexorin, which basically shuts down cellular respiration. While not as potent as raw cyanide, lexorin is most certainly a brand name of some nitrile compound that NanoTrasen has a trademark on and sells as a paint thinner or something. BUT! Cyanide/Nitrile is basically a carbon and a nitrogen triple bonded together, and lexorin is made by adding plasma, nitrogen, and hydrogen.

Thus, I propose that Plasma looks something like this:

[[File:Plasma_molecule.png]]

Essentially, Tritiated Ethanol. It's volatile, burns very easily, the Alcohol group at the right (Tritahol?) provides it with enough mass and hydrogen bonding (tritium bonding?) to keep it stable as a liquid, yet is still volatile, and is incredibly bad to drink.

This also answers several questions.

One, plasma is a radioactive compound, yes, but the halflife of Tritium is 12.3 YEARS. It is very fucking toxic, and is a great catalyst/solvent. It's not very toxic ON CONTACT, for short periods. But upon ingestion, it basically fucks your whole body up. The biochemistry of this is that your body uses the tritium/tritium oxide to replace your normal protium. Now, Deuterium in large quantities fucks you up because it's heavier than protium, and as such, has interesting effects on your body (and by interesting I mean "bad/deadly"). Now let's make it even heavier, and radioactive. Yeah.

Two, plasma would be rare on Earth, but in a gas giant that's composed mainly of this shit, it'd be produced easily. Even more so if the Plasma-Gas-Giant doesn't have an atmosphere that could block out the cosmic rays.

Three, Tritium has a rather large half life, and even then is rather weak as far as radioactivity goes (you still don't want it in you, however). You can dunk yourself in tritium oxide (T2O), and so long as you don't get any IN YOU, your guts will be fine, you only risk skin cancer.

Four, given that burning plasma only produces CO2 (and water, which is actually Tritium Oxide, aka super-heavy water, aka radio-fucking-active water), it can ONLY have Hydrogen (or isotopes of), Carbon, and oxygen in it. Tritium is necessary to get the weight up into the range where it can be a liquid at standard temperature and pressure AT ALL, while at the same time giving it the necessary toxicity. Plasma gives you TOXIN damage, it does NOT give you oxyloss damage, so it doesn't just suffocate you, it actively attacks your body in SOME way. Ethane (C2H6) does not do this, and is pretty much completely non-toxic. Hell, the only real dangers of ethane are asphyxiation (oxyloss) and igniting it (burn/bomb).

Five, the OH (or OT, as it were) is necessary to also bump up the weight into the range where it can be a liquid/solid at room temperature. It also gives it enough intermolecular forces (the hydrogen/tritium bonding) to aid it being a liquid.

Six, Solid plasma is plasma put under intense pressure for a quick moment, allowing it to crystallize. When left alone, it will eventually melt, and evaporate.

Seven, NOWHERE IS THE EXPLICIT MASS OF PLASMA ACTUALLY STATED.

Eight, the combustion equation for plasma would be:

C<sub>2</sub>T<sub>5</sub>OT + 3O<sub>2</sub> ---> 2CO<sub>2</sub> + 3T<sub>2</sub>O
